Sorrenti's Cherry Valley Vineyard PAWines Take a Virtual Tour

Niagara

Semi-Dry

This old native variety has a fresh grapey flavor and aroma and the wine is excellent when chilled. A great summertime drink. Just like the grapes grown in Grandma's backyard.

This wine is made from the Niagara grape, which is a native American (Labrusca) grape variety grown in the cooler climates of the United States. Native American grape varieties have strikingly different physical (and flavor) characteristics than their European counterparts. A Niagara grape cluster is large with loose, individual berries. The grape skin is thicker and the inside of the grape is fleshy.

Did You Know: 100 years ago, PA was #2 grape growing state behind New York (before California's rise to dominence) and Niagara was one of the most commonly grown. Welch's used the grape for juices, confections and fructose sugar in the age before Island cane was so abundantly imported. Today we still export huge quantities of Niagara root stock all around the world for use in grafting.
